Switzerland - September 24 - Lucerne
10/15/2026
We continued our Swiss journey in Lucerne where we walked across the Kapellbrucke (Chapel Bridge) and climbed to the top of the Musegger Mauer (Musegg Wall), an intact medieval city wall w/nine towers. One of the towers had a massive clock that is still operational...though it was about 7 minutes slow - according to my iPhone.
Lucerne Old Town was great as well, and the view of Mt. Pilatus (tomorrow's adventure) was a sight to behold. We also visited the Lion Monument - a sculpture that was created to memorialize a group of soldiers who died defending the city. Mark Twain famously described the site as "the saddest and most moving piece of stone in the world", which I had read before we saw it. After seeing it up close...I completely understand and agree. It leaves an impression on the viewer.
We happened to walk by The Old Swiss House and restaurant where Hunter and Ally had dined on their honeymoon and which they HIGHLY recommended to us. We were lucky enough that the manager was able to squeeze us in with a 6:00 pm reservation that evening. I think he did it, in part, because he found Ally Burdick in his computer system when we gave him our name for the reservation. :)
We showed up a few minutes before 6:00 and learned that the restaurant doesn't even open their doors until 6:00 pm. So, we sat and chatted with lovely woman - named Robin - who was waiting to see if she could also sneak in at 6:00...but did not yet have a reservation. When the doors opened, she was told, "Alas...we are now completely booked." so we asked the manager if it would be alright for her to join our table for the evening. He said, "It will be a little cramped, but if you like, that would be fine!" So, she joined us and we treated Robin to dinner. She was a retired school teacher and a widow. She was going on a cruise with a friend, and had arrived in Lucerne a couple days early. She had read about The Old Swiss House and thought she would just take her chances. Robin and I both ordered the weiner schnitzel, which was prepared table-side with a TON of butter...and it was amazing! I also had crepes suzette for dessert...never had that before. Divine!
It was a really wonderful evening, and I'm sure will be one of our fondest memories from this adventure.
