Switzerland - September 25 - Mt. Pilatus

10/15/2026

Day two in Lucerne took us to the top of Mt. Pilatus via a Golden Round Trip ticket that involved: - A ferry ride across Lake Lucerne to Alpnachstad - A ride up the Alpnachstad train - the world's steepest cogwheel railway - to almost the top of Mt. Pilatus - The Dragon Ride cable car descent on the other side of the mountain to Fräkmüntegg - A small gondola ride to the town of Kriens - And then, a bus ride (or walk) back to Lucerne - we chose to walk - it was another beautiful day At the top of Mt. Pilatus there were actually TWO hotels, and a couple of restaurants/cafes. There were also some short hikes up to the "summits" on either side of the mountain. From the top, you could see something like 73 different alpine peaks, so as you can imagine the views were incredible. As we were standing in line to grab some lunch, Nancy noticed that the women in front of us kept looking at the back of her hand and correctly surmised that they had just gotten engaged (about 10 minutes ago). The guys had planned it out well and actually got down on his knee on one of the summits. The young lady was still partially in shock. They were from America and ended up sitting with us for lunch, and we had a great chat.
