Northumberland - August 27 - Durham & Hadrian's Wall

10/12/2026

This was our first train trip - we rode up on Thursday morning to Durham and explored the Durham Cathedral...which was awesome. It has a pipe organ with more than 5,700 pipes. Yes...more than 5,700...not a typo. Then, we picked up a rental car and drove west to the Housesteads Roman Fort - the remains of an old Roman fort and part of Hadrians Wall. It was fascinating to learn that the Roman controlled this part of England - so far North - for something like 500 years...and then just decided it wasn't worth the hassle...so they left. We spent the night in Lumley Castle...it's always kind of cool to stay in a castle.
