Greece - September 5 - Akrotiki, Beaches and Olive Oil Tasting

10/13/2026

We set off this morning to explore...well...pretty much the whole island of Santorini. Our first stop was the Akrotiki Acheological Site - which to be honest - I was expecting to be a bit of a let-down after what we'd just seen in Athens. It wasn't. One the one hand, it was the rubbled remains of another ancient city...but...one of the things that made it cool is that they had actually built an entire enclosure around the ruins. So, they had bascially turned the ruins into an indoor museum. It reminded both of us - a bit - of the Vasa Museum in Stockholm - a museum built around a Viking ship that sank on its maiden voyage and was - eventually - hauled out of the water to make the museum. Next, we visited the Red Beach - which was beautiful, and then the Perissa Black Sand Beach, which was also cool, but a bit more commercial. I did grab a bottle full of black sand that - perhaps - I will do something artistic with...someday. In the afternoon, we visited the Santo Winery for an olive oil tasting experience. (Yes, olive oil...not wine.) I learned more about Olive Oil than I ever expected to in my lifetime. We also had some relaxing time back at the hotel spa....aaaaahhhhhh.
