Belgium - September 30 - Last Trip
10/23/2026
This morning we began our final trip of this first phase of our London/European adventure. We boarded a train - the Eurostar - and headed to Belgium - specifically to Ghent via Brussells. Today was the only rainy(ish) day that we've had on our entire trip. We only needed an umbrella for about 20 minutes though during our initial stroll around Ghent.
The Old City section of Ghent is a beautiful - and very busy - area with people, cars, bicycles and buses all pretty much doing whatever the hell they want. In other words...keep your head on a swivel. We wandered around for a couple of hours and had some AMAZING Belgian Chocolates. OMG! We mostly scouted out buildings from the outside that we plan to tour in more depth in the near future. We did take a quick peek inside St. Michael's church, which was near one of the canal bridges.
Given that the weather was a bit misty, we decided to use our canal boat tour ticket this afternoon for a ride around the Old City area. The canal boat has a canvas tarp that raised and lowered, so it could fit under the low bridges. Our boat captain/tour guide had a very dry sense of humor, so we enjoyed the trip.
BTW - We chose Ghent as our Belgium base of operations, because it is centrally located and a short train ride to the other Belgian cities that we want to visit.
